Review of The Coffee Book
The reason of picking up this book is to learn more about coffee, especially the skills to make a cup of good coffee.
Fun facts
In this book, I found a surprising fact: arabica actually contains less caffeine than robusta. I also thought it is the other way round.
I also did not know caffeine is a natural pesticide.
Grind size
The author mentions the grind size suitable for every brewing method:
1. Super-fine grind = Ibrik coffee pot (Turkish coffee);
2. Fine = expresso machine;
3. Medium-coarse = filter;
4. Coarse = French press.
New practice
As I have an expresso machine at home, I have learned one new thing. The portafilter has to be locked into the machine when not using to make sure the gasket stays in place. I have been letting my portafilter sitting in the drawer after washing. Thus, after reading about it, I have tried my best to remember locking the portafilter to its group head.
Conclusion
Overall, The Coffee Book expands my knowledge on coffee. As for the skill part, this book does provide the knowledge. But as with any skill, practice makes perfect. We cannot improve much just by reading.
All in all, The Coffee Book is a good addition to your book collection if you love coffee.
